Doesn't this sound easy to create a new folder on one of our Windows desktops? However, data won't lie, users encounter the challenges such as desktop clutter, mixed folder names, and folder creation without mouse.

This post elucidates how to create a new folder on the desktop with keyboard or mouse, its caveats during and after new creation are involved, aiming to make your desktop folders organized and readily accessible, keeping your workspace clutter-free.

How to create a new desktop folder in Windows 11, 10, 8, 7

Windows operating systems provide simple ways to create folders both through the mouse and keyboard. You can easily create a folder on your desktop by right-clicking on any empty space of the desktop, selecting New, and then Folder.

You may know the above by heart a long time ago, what is unknown is its shortcut. You can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + N to instantly create a new folder.

These methods are consistent across Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11, ensuring a seamless experience across different versions. These two options—mouse or keyboard—are to cater to different preferences and increase efficiency.

For those who prefer working without a mouse, Windows also allows creating folders without touching the mouse. The steps are simple:

  1. Press the Windows key to open the Start menu.
  2. Press D to minimize all windows and view the desktop.
  3. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + N to create a new folder.
  4. Type a name for the folder and press Enter.

This is also beneficial for us to stay in the flow of keyboard shortcuts when we have a broken mouse.

Share these basic methods and take a step further by reading the following tricks.

A unified approach to folder & file organization

There are ins and outs in creating a new desktop folder you may never notice. The structured naming and folder location are significant:

Tips: For instance, the new folders can be named 1-Novels, 2-Videoclips, and 3-Testing. Let's take the folder 1-Novels as an example: the subdirectories should be named 01-NovelName, 02-OtherNovelName, and so on. If you have multiple subdirectories, use 001,002, or 0001 to 0123…

Warning: When choosing the new installation folder location, select the system drive (usually the C drive) instead of the desktop. Because applications need to integrate with the system and access system files, settings, or registries, which are typically on the C drive. Installing them on the desktop can cause issues. It's best to follow the recommended path (usually on the C drive under "Program Files").

Oftentimes, the desktop folder is temporary for quick access and one-time reference. After squeezing its essence, it becomes trash.

I believe no one keeps vast files or folders on the desktop, which is cumbersome. We can batch delete them swiftly, while checking their content under visual/non-visual mode via iBoysoft DiskGeeker for Windows.
